„Daddy, daddy!“ The back door flew open, and Jason rushed into the kitchen area, jumping up and down with excitement. „Dad has two kittens. Can we keep them? Pleeease? I am sure Bella would love some company, too.“
Casey, who was just preparing Marie's evening meal, put down the carrot and turned around. His eyes fell on the box in his husband's hands. „Oh. How could this happen," he asked, having a hard time hiding his grin.
Zeke shrugged, apologizing. „I know, after the rats last month, I've promised that it will be the last time. But this is an emergency case. You should have been there.
The apartment was a messy place; two little children, their parents so drunk that they could barely stand upright. They will need a longtime therapy, and even then, it isn't sure if they will make it.“
„Another sad story,“ Casey said, placing a coffee on the kitchen counter. „What will happen with the children?“
Smiling slightly, Zeke put the box onto the ground; a ginger, little head peered out curiously. Jason shouted with joy. „Don't worry; it's all about the cats this time. We already have a lovely foster family in mind for the children.“
Casey watched Jason, who was kneeling beside the box now, playing with the kittens. His thoughts wandered back to the day when Zeke had brought him home. The skinny, scared little boy, who refused to talk had won his heart immediately, and what was supposed to last only for some days had finally changed their life completely.
Now they were adoptive parents not only of Jason but of Marie, too. A cat, a little puppy who had lost his left leg in a horrible accident, two white rats, and a hamster completed their little family. And a foster pony; a former circus pony, too old for the performance in the arena he had just been left behind. Now he spent his remaining years on a farm nearby, with only Jason riding him now and then.
„We didn't even notice them at first; penned up in a dark, dirty cage. I don't want to think about what they planned to do with them.
I was hoping that maybe the Millers, the family who will take care of the children for the next time, would also take the kitties, but sadly their own son is allergic. So...“ Zeke shrugged. „I didn't have the heart to bring them to a shelter. But they are cute; I guess we can find a good home for them soon.“
Casey's eyes wandered back to Jason, who now had one cat on his lap, while he was caressing the other one behind the ears. And he laughed slightly. „You don't want to break your son's heart, do you? Maybe you should better start to rebuild the old garden house into an animal resort. And who knows, one day we might even be able to ask for gate money for our zoo."
