:::
The second he opened his eyes, he could feel the sharp blade of a knife resting at his throat. Confused, he tried to awake fully, then he realized that this situation was not new for him.
It had happened about eight years ago, at the holy ground of a hidden library. She was the keeper of untold secrets, and he was the enemy who threatened to destroy them. At least in her eyes. She did jump at him, holding a knife at his throat. Ready to kill him. He only looked at her, and he knew that he would never be able to harm her. As a soldier, he had already seen too much, and he had learned that there was not only black and white, good and bad, truth and lie. Often enough you could find both at the same place.
It had taken long until she had started to trust him. Trust turned into friendship. Friendship into love. Though he should have known better. Love and war never fit together well. And finally he had to make the most difficult decision ever. To save her life, he left her without any goodbye.
:::
Her eyes were dark with sadness and rage when she increased the pressure at his throat. „How could you do that,“ she whispered. „Why did you leave behind me without a word? Seven years I thought you are dead, and I mourned for you. Why not at least a short goodbye?“
He could smell her and feel her warmth, and for a moment, he closed his eyes. Because I wouldn't have been able to leave you behind then, he thought, it tore me apart inwardly, but it was the only way to keep you safe. He re-opened his eyes; she was even more beautiful than in all his dreams. Not able to resist he wanted to lift his hand, touch her face, but as if she could read his mind, she flinched back.
„It would be too easy,“ she said.“ When I came to know that you are still alive, of all places here, in The Burgue, all I wanted was to find and to kill you. But that would be much too easy, after all, you did to me.“ Lithely like a cat she jumped at the small window sill, opened her wings and vanished into the pitch-dark night.
It took a while until he dared to move again. His fingers wandered over his throat, and he could feel a tiny bit of blood dripping out of the cut, the blade had left. Not a dream; this time she had been real.
