Orcs. So many of them had lost their lives today. There had been no other way. They were creatures of the evil; they followed the words of the Dark Lord without hesitation. To find Frodo, to kill him, to take the ring and bring it back to Mordor was their only goal. Sam didn't know all about the ring's power, but what he had seen so far was enough. In the hands of Sauron, it would bring perdition, pain, and death all over the world, and everything good would be lost.

Sam would do everything to help Frodo finish his dangerous task. Nevertheless, he couldn't find sleep tonight. While plunging his sword into an orc's foul-smelling body, he saw something shining in his eyes for a split second. Fear. Sorrow. Understanding. And he had to think about Gandalf's words again.

Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. For the first time, Sam started to understand. It wasn't always like it seemed to be. Sometimes the good was not good through and through, and the evil not evil through and through. Maybe even orcs were more than just merciless puppets in the hand of Sauron. Maybe deep inside they could feel something like compassion and love. Maybe they were just victims of a cruel faith they weren't able to escape.

Sighing, Sam threw off the blanket and got up. Went over to Merry, who was keeping watch. „Go, find some sleep,“ he said, dropping down on a flat stone beside the campfire. „I will take over your shift.“

Title: The Decision
Character: Galadriel
Prompt: fandom rush / orcs
Words: 301

:::

On the outside unmoved, Galadriel stood on the ship's deck, which would take her to her final destination. The Undying Lands; every elf hoped to end here one day. Every elf? Not her. Not now. Gil-Galad had sent her on her way, and she obeyed. How could she not, he was her king.

But to be honest, she had never been an obedient follower. Already as a child, she had been a wild, free thinker, a fighter for what she believed in. Later, she was a good military leader; her soldiers respected and loved her. Then her brother died through the hand of the biggest evil she had ever met. And it became her life's work to find and destroy Sauron.

Even though a long, peaceful time passed, and even the elves started to believe that the darkness was gone forever, she knew better. He would come back sooner rather than later.

Her eyes rested on the bright light in front of her, and the thought tormented her. The moment she stepped through the gates of the Undying Lands, there would be no way back. The earth would be left unprotected, and with it all the good people, dwarves, and elves. No one would be on guard, and darkness would sneak over the land unnoticed until it would be too late.

Too late! Sauron would gain more and more power, destroy everything good, until nothing was left anymore. No! She shook her head almost unnoticeably, straightened her body. It might be disobedience; maybe Gil-Galad would banish her from the Undying Lands forever, maybe her friends would turn away from her, and she would be all alone. But she would never stop fighting him. As she had once promised at her brother's grave.

And she turned around to the railing... and jumped.
