The world was bathed in fire and ash; hot smoke was stinging in Sam's eyes. But he wasn't afraid. Everything was like it was supposed to be.

He pulled Frodo's lifeless body closer to him, pushed a strand of his hair from his forehead. „It's done,“ he whispered,“ you can rest now.“

And he, Sam would stay at his side, hold him, until the endless night would finally embrace them. Deep inside, he had always known that it would end like this; the moment they had left the Shire behind, he had felt that this was the last time he saw the green hills, the old mill, the field of sunflowers.

But he hadn't hesitated. It had been Frodo's fate to carry the ring to the fiery mountain, and it had been his to be the humble servant at his side, to take good care of him so that he could master this task.
