„Look what I found in the attic.“ Casey put a small wooden box onto the kitchen counter and opened it. „Tons of cards and letters from all over the world.“
„Oh.“ Mrs. Conner turned around, her hands shaking slightly. „It's a while since I've thought about them.“
Casey grabbed one of the cards, showing an antic sailboat. „I wish you were here by me,“ he read, „and we could enjoy this beauty together. Just know, honey bee, that you are always in my heart.
Ähm... honey bee?“
His mom smiled weakly. „My dad used to call me like this.“
„Your dad?“ Casey frowned, confused. „You never talk about him. What has happened?“
Silence for a while, then Mrs. Conner dropped onto a chair, sighing slightly. „It's a long story.“
Casey turned the card up and down. „Hm. But he is my grandpa.“
Slowly she nodded. „ Yes. Maybe it's about time that you get to know him.“
„He is still alive?“ Shocked, Casey's eyes widened.
„I'm afraid not. It's about ten years since I got his last card. Something must have happened to him, I know that much.“
„Wait!“ Casey stared into the box. „All these cards and letters are from him?“
His mother nodded. „It was his way of showing me that I was always in his heart. No matter what has happened.“
„But what is happened? What did he do?“
„I will tell you,“ Mrs. Connor said softly. „But not now. Read the cards at first. Get to know him. Then you might be able to understand better what he has done.“
