Characters: Markus, Meghan (the woman behind glass)
Prompt: tough choices

„No!“ Markus looked at the woman behind the glass; the lab was her home for 15 years already, and he always thought that it would stay like this until he found a way to save her. She was his friend, his confidant, his mentor. She had kept him sane even during the hardest times. She was the one who knew all his thoughts, his secrets. „ No, I won't allow this. When you leave the lab, there will be no way back.“
„I know.“ Her voice calm as ever. „I have accepted my fate; I was already lost from the day when the virus infected me without bringing the death.“ She pressed her hand against the glass, spread her fingers. „You need to let me go. I'm the only one who can save your friends.“
Markus felt tears burning in his eyes; he couldn't remember when he had cried for the last time. Deep inside he knew that she was right.
„I'm old and tired; the world is not my place anymore,“ she continued and smiled. „Let me help you one last time, and I can die in peace. And happy, because I know the future is yours.“
